Exporting Leather Goods from Indonesia: What Buyers Need to Know
Indonesia is one of the world's leading exporters of leather goods, and Yogyakarta sits at the heart of that industry. If you're considering sourcing wholesale leather products from Indonesia for the first time, this guide covers everything you need to know before placing your first order.
Minimum Order Quantities (MOQ)
Most Indonesian leather manufacturers — including KYC Leather — operate with a minimum order quantity of 50 pieces per style. This applies to standard catalog products.
For custom OEM or private label orders, MOQs may vary depending on the complexity of the design, tooling requirements, and material sourcing. In most cases:
- Standard catalog products: 50 pcs MOQ
- Custom color or hardware variations: 100 pcs MOQ
- Fully custom OEM designs: 200 pcs MOQ (includes tooling and pattern development)
- Private label (custom branding only): 50 pcs MOQ on catalog products
If you're testing a new market or product line, we recommend starting with a sample order of 1–5 pieces before committing to a full production run.
Lead Times
Lead times from Indonesia depend on the order type and current production schedule:
| Order Type | Typical Lead Time |
|---|---|
| Standard catalog (in stock) | 7–14 days |
| Standard catalog (production) | 15–20 days |
| Custom color/hardware | 20–25 days |
| Full OEM (new design) | 30–45 days |
| Private label (catalog + branding) | 15–25 days |
Lead times begin from the date of deposit payment and design approval. We provide weekly production updates via WhatsApp or email.
Shipping Terms and Options
KYC Leather ships worldwide using the following Incoterms:
- EXW (Ex Works): You arrange pickup from our Yogyakarta facility. Best for buyers with established freight forwarders.
- FOB Semarang/Surabaya: We deliver to the nearest major port. You handle ocean freight and import customs.
- CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight): We arrange shipping to your destination port. You handle import customs and local delivery.
- DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): We handle everything including import duties. Best for buyers who want a simple, all-inclusive price.
For small orders (under 50kg), we typically ship via DHL, FedEx, or UPS express courier. For larger orders, sea freight via container (FCL or LCL) is more economical.
Customs and Import Documentation
When importing leather goods from Indonesia, you'll typically need:
- Commercial Invoice — We provide this with every shipment
- Packing List — Detailed breakdown of items, weights, and dimensions
- Certificate of Origin — Available on request; required for preferential tariff rates under trade agreements
- HS Code Classification — Leather bags typically fall under HS 4202; belts under 4203
- Phytosanitary Certificate — Not required for finished leather goods (only for raw hides)
We work with a licensed export agent in Yogyakarta who handles all export documentation. Buyers in the EU, US, Australia, and Japan can typically clear customs without issues using our standard documentation package.
Payment Terms
Standard payment terms for new buyers:
- 50% deposit upon order confirmation
- 50% balance before shipment (after production photos are approved)
For established buyers with a track record of 3+ orders, we offer:
- 30% deposit / 70% before shipment
- Net 30 terms (subject to credit approval)
We accept T/T (bank transfer), PayPal (for sample orders), and Western Union. Letter of Credit (L/C) is available for orders above USD 10,000.
Quality Control
Every order goes through a three-stage quality control process:
- Material inspection: Leather hides and hardware are inspected before cutting
- In-process inspection: Stitching, edge finishing, and hardware attachment are checked during production
- Final inspection: Completed products are inspected against your approved sample before packing
We provide production photos at each stage via WhatsApp. For large orders, we can arrange third-party inspection through SGS, Bureau Veritas, or your preferred QC agency.
